Final Guard and Doxology

2 Peter 3:1

After the dark catalogue of chapter 2, Peter turns back to his readers with the warm address “beloved,” a word he will repeat at each turning point of this chapter. The false teachers have been exposed; now the faithful are to be strengthened. Calling this “this second epistle” most naturally points to 1 Peter, so that the two letters stand together as one pastor’s counsel to the same churches.

Peter describes both letters as having a single aim: to “stir up” the minds of his readers “by way of remembrance.” He used the same language in 1:13, where he resolved to keep reminding them as long as he lived. Remembering in Scripture is more than recalling information. It means bringing known truth to bear on present choices, the way Israel was told to remember the exodus in order to keep the covenant.

The phrase “pure minds” is a compliment and a guard. The readers’ understanding has not yet been clouded by the teachers who “beguile unstable souls” (2:14). Peter does not offer them novelty. He wants the clear, unmixed thinking they already possess kept clear, alert enough to recognize error when it arrives dressed in reasonable arguments. Truth that is familiar can still fall asleep in the mind, and the apostle’s task is to wake it.

Word / Phrase Notes

εἰλικρινῆ διάνοιαν (eilikrinē dianoian) — pure minds

Eilikrinēs describes what is unmixed and therefore sincere, without hidden contamination; dianoia is the thinking mind, the faculty of understanding and judgment. Peter credits his readers with a sincere, uncorrupted way of thinking, set in contrast with the teachers whose minds are governed by desire.

1 Peter 1:13

ἐν ὑπομνήσει (en hypomnēsei) — by way of remembrance

The phrase repeats 1:13 and frames the closing chapter as a reminder rather than new instruction. Peter’s method is to bring to the surface what the churches already received, so that settled truth becomes active conviction again.
