2 Peter 2:1

The opening “But” turns sharply from the close of chapter 1. Peter has just described true prophecy as speech that came when holy men were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Israel’s history had another side. Alongside the true prophets stood counterfeit ones who claimed the Lord’s name for messages of their own making (Deuteronomy 13; Jeremiah 23). Peter expects the pattern to repeat. “There shall be” looks ahead, yet later in the chapter he shifts into present and past tenses, which suggests the danger is already active somewhere and moving closer. He also changes the title from prophets to teachers. These people may not claim new revelation at all; they reinterpret the message the church has already received.

“Privily shall bring in” pictures something carried in alongside, as contraband travels with ordinary cargo. “Damnable heresies” is literally “heresies of destruction.” The word hairesis could once describe a school of thought or a chosen opinion, but here it names teaching that splits the fellowship and whose end is ruin. The rest of the letter fills in its content: contempt for the Lord’s authority, permission for sensuality, and the claim that Christ will not return in judgment (3:3–4).

The most startling charge is “denying the Lord that bought them.” The title is despotēs, the master who owns a household of slaves, and “bought” recalls the price paid to acquire them. The price was Christ’s own blood (1 Peter 1:18–19). Two truths stand side by side. Christ’s purchase reached even those who would finally reject it, and their denial was real because they had once confessed him. Peter knew the weight of that word from a courtyard fire, and he also knew how quickly his Lord restored a repentant denier. What marks these teachers is persistence without repentance.

They bring “upon themselves swift destruction.” The adjective translated “swift” describes Peter’s own approaching death in 1:14, so it stresses nearness and certainty more than speed. The destruction (apōleia) is the final loss that the New Testament sets opposite salvation (Philippians 1:28). His judgment confirms the end of the road they have chosen.

Word / Phrase Notes

τὸν ἀγοράσαντα αὐτοὺς δεσπότην (ton agorasanta autous despotēn) — the Lord that bought them

Despotēs is the owner of slaves, a title stressing full authority, and the participle refers to acquiring them by purchase. Early Christians used this commercial language for redemption through Christ’s death. To deny such a Master is both rebellion and ingratitude, because he has paid the price for the very people who disown him.

αἱρέσεις ἀπωλείας (haireseis apōleias) — damnable heresies

Hairesis can describe a party or a chosen opinion. Joined to apōleia, “destruction,” it describes teachings that divide the community and lead their followers to ruin. Peter uses apōleia repeatedly in this letter for the final destruction of the ungodly.
