Final Testimony and Greetings

1 Peter 5:1

The word “elders” follows naturally from the warning that judgment begins at the house of God (4:17). If the household is being tested, those who care for it carry special responsibility. In the apostolic churches elders were the recognized leaders of local congregations, a title rooted in Israel’s history and carried into the church from its earliest days (Acts 11:30; 14:23). Peter does not command them from a distance. “I exhort” translates a verb of earnest appeal, the language of a friend who comes alongside rather than a superior issuing orders.

His self-description is striking. Though an apostle (1:1), he calls himself a “fellow elder,” standing on the same level as the leaders he addresses. He claims no rank over them, only shared labor. The man who once argued with others over who would be greatest has learned the lesson of the towel and basin. Whatever authority he carries flows from his service to Christ, and he calls the elders into that same service.

Peter is also “a witness of the sufferings of Christ.” He had heard Jesus foretell the cross, watched the agony in Gethsemane, and followed at a distance into the high priest’s courtyard. His testimony rests on what he saw. Yet witnessing also means bearing testimony, and Peter’s own life of faithful leadership under threat continues that witness. The elders who lead in dangerous times join him in it.

Finally, he is “a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed.” Suffering and glory belong together in this letter (1:11; 4:13). Peter already shares in the coming glory by promise, though its unveiling awaits Christ’s return. This hope steadies both him and the elders. The path of service may lead through hardship, as Jesus had told Peter it would (John 21:18–19), but it ends in the revealing of glory that no persecutor can take away.

Word / Phrase Notes

ὁ συμπρεσβύτερος (ho sympresbyteros) — who am also an elder

Literally “the fellow elder,” a compound found only here in the New Testament. The prefix expresses partnership: Peter places himself alongside the elders rather than above them. The word reflects solidarity in labor and danger, and it fits the pattern in which apostles shared leadership with local elders (Acts 15:6).

κοινωνός (koinōnos) — a partaker

One who shares in something with others, a partner. Peter speaks of sharing in glory not yet revealed, treating the future as so certain that he can describe himself as already a participant. The same word family describes believers as sharers in Christ’s sufferings (4:13) and in the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4).
