1 Peter 4:1

“Forasmuch then” gathers up everything Peter has just said about Christ in 3:18–22. The righteous One suffered for the unrighteous, was put to death in the flesh, was made alive by the Spirit, and now sits at God’s right hand with every power made subject to him. Peter does not leave that confession in the realm of doctrine. Its first consequence is a summons: “arm yourselves likewise with the same mind.” The disciple who once drew a sword in Gethsemane now tells the church that its weapon is a settled way of thinking, the resolve Christ carried to the cross.

That resolve was the willingness to obey God whatever obedience cost. Jesus did not stumble into suffering. He set his face toward Jerusalem, prayed “not my will, but thine,” and committed himself to the righteous Judge. Peter’s readers face a smaller but real version of the same choice. They can keep peace with their neighbors by returning to familiar sins, or they can do the will of God and accept the reproach that follows. To arm oneself with Christ’s mind is to settle that question in advance, before the pressure comes.

“He that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin” is best read in that light. Peter is speaking of the believer who has chosen suffering rather than sin. Such a person has shown where his loyalty lies; sin is no longer the master he serves. The words do not claim that a suffering Christian never errs, nor that pain cleanses guilt. Pain can embitter as easily as it refines, and only Christ’s suffering atones. What the phrase describes is a decisive break: the one who would rather bear reproach than return to the old life has turned his back on sin as a way of living.

Peter frames this break through endurance. Each time a believer accepts loss for the sake of obedience, the break with sin is confirmed, and the grace that made the choice possible is shown to be stronger than the old desires.

Word / Phrase Notes

ὁπλίσασθε τὴν αὐτὴν ἔννοιαν (hoplisasthe tēn autēn ennoian) — arm yourselves with the same mind

The verb pictures equipping oneself for combat, as a soldier puts on weapons before battle. The object is ennoia, a way of thinking that issues in conduct: a settled intention or resolve rather than abstract intellect. In the wisdom literature of the Greek Old Testament the word describes the discernment that guards a person’s path. Peter asks believers to take up the same purpose that governed Christ’s obedience unto suffering.

πέπαυται ἁμαρτίας (pepautai hamartias) — hath ceased from sin

The perfect tense describes a settled condition resulting from a past decision. The one who has accepted suffering for obedience stands in a state of having broken with sin. Context rules out a claim of sinless perfection, since Peter goes on to exhort these same believers to love, sobriety, and holiness. The phrase names a changed allegiance: sin no longer directs the life.
